How Our Dog Landed Us Our First House

Now this is a story all about how… our little shelter mutt landed us our first house.

Let me set the scene:

It was summer 2020. We were both living with our parents. We knew we wanted to be living on our own (together) before I started my first full-time job in November. So, we decided to buy a house. Simple, right?

WRONG.

This was summer 2020, like I said. Due to the global pandemic, the housing market in the United States was INSANE (I mean… it still is, 2 years later!). Over the course of 1.5 months, we had put in 7 offers — But none of them worked out.

Yes, that’s a lot of offers. Admittedly, we weren’t being picky enough. But we were first-time home-buyers, we wanted to move out of our parents’ houses, and we just wanted to win, gosh-dang-it!

In hindsight, many of the houses we had put offers in on, we were settling for. I’m glad we ended up with our house in the end.

But just how did we end up with our house? Well…

We knew we wanted to get a puppy very soon after we got a house. Maybe this was why we were rushing to get into ANY house. But then, at the end of June my family had to put down our family dog, Jackson (f*ck cancer). My whole family + Zack were feeling very lonely without a dog around the house.

So, since we needed a win, we decided to look for a puppy to adopt. We found Charlie (previously Judith) online at the Toledo Humane Society and brought her home on Wednesday, July 15!

2 days later, our house came on the market. With the way the market was in 2020, you had to act fast — so we had to leave work early and head right there! Because of the short notice, we didn’t have anyone to watch Charlie and she wasn’t crate trained yet, so we brought her with us. She was only 11 pounds, so we planned on just carrying her around the house like a little purse dog.

We loved the house and decided to put an offer in (big surprise, we were making offers like they were going out of style!). HOWEVER, we actually really loved this house.

Come to find out that the homeowners had cameras outside of their house and saw that we brought our puppy… Uh oh.

But to our happy surprise, their realtor told ours that while our offer was not the highest, the homeowners decided that they wanted their house to go to fellow dog lovers like themselves!

Charlie should have been named “Lucky” instead, because she was exactly the good luck charm we needed!

Now, 2 years later, we love our humble bungalow. It’s perfect for our little family right now!
